Give Gratitude: #GivingTuesday

Give Gratitude: #GivingTuesday

Gratitude is “the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.”

  • Thanks
  • Appreciation
  • Kindness

The other night, on #GivingTuesday, I attended a talk at Open Doors. It was about #GivingTuesday and how it has become a worldwide phenomenon. One of the speakers claimed it started in Canada. I am not sure about that, but I thought it was a good topic to reiterate.

Hands holding a heart regarding Giving Tuesday

You see like sports, kindness has to be perfected to get good at. I try to be kind, but I often slip up. How about you? Another activity that we were encouraged to do was to thank someone for their kindness towards us. There were some powerful stories shared. Very powerful. However, what is said at Open Doors remains at Open Doors.

It did get me to thinking about some of the people that I should thank:

  • A teacher that steered you right
  • A lawyer that believed your side, even when the monetary reward was small
  • A friend that stuck by your side, even when things got rough
  • An advisor that steered you towards solace
  • A poor person that offered you aid, when they did not have much
  • A parent that sacrificed much for your betterment

We ALL have a story or two (or more) like the above. All.

It seems there is an organization in Canada: “Calling all Canadians! Join #GivingTuesday, the world’s largest generosity movement. Everyone has something to give and every act of generosity counts.”

One kindly soul at Open Door explained that the appeals to her inbox have never been greater. The needs seem real. Unfortunately, she had given all that she could. The kindly soul, who approaches being a nonagenarian – just keeps giving and giving. Her sharing, her time, her warmth, and her spirit. Worth so much more than dollars and cents.

My buddy says that he likes to slip some green into the Salvation Army bubble during the holidays – less fuss and no bombardment of mail or email during the year. Makes sense.

While #GivingTuesday is the last Tuesday of the November, which coincides with the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, the needs and the help are still needed. I am not asked you do donate anywhere. I am asking you to be grateful and share some of that gratitude.

You know the drill:

  • Thanksgiving
  • Black Friday
  • Shop Local Saturday
  • Football Sunday
  • Cyber Monday
  • #GivingTuesday

It’s a simple idea: a movement that encourages people to do good. Thank others for the good that they have done, and if you can, pay it forward. Make every day a #GivingTuesday.

  • Give time
  • Give help
  • Give smiles
  • Give kindness
  • And if you must, give money
